Julian's Room

Each bedroom has its own distinct character, as is evident in the unique style that constitutes Julian’s room. This room is named after Julian Brook Plumptre, 22nd Baron FitzWalter, who inherited the title from his father after his death in 2004. Julian Plumptre manages the Goodnestone estate and was responsible for initiating and overseeing the house’s recent renovation that was completed in 2016. This was a renovation that saw the addition of 105 additional radiators alongside new plumbing and electrics, as well as a renovated interior style with the aim of bringing an opulent touch of modernity to this Palladian mansion whilst maintaining its rich historical character. For the current Lord FitzWalter, this restoration was one that he says ‘recreated the family home that I remember and love, whilst breathing a breath of fresh contemporary air’ into the mansion. A house he had lived in since his infancy, Julian’s parents, the 21st Lord and Lady FitzWalter moved into it in 1955 with the aim of renovating it after its army requisition during the war. The house has indeed undergone numerous restoration projects but never lost the infinite historical complexities that comprise its essential character.

For this room has a distinctly classical feel, decorated in shades of plum and mushroom, a colour scheme inspired by Lord FitzWalter’s more simplistic adolescent colour preferences of purple and orange. The classical aura of the bedroom is only enhanced by the palatial chandelier, antique trunk and ornate oak tables, reminiscent of a former time in the stately home. Floral oil paintings in complimentary colours align the walls and the intricate chevalier wallpaper casts likely acts as a historical homage to the origins of the FitzWalters, who, of Norman origin, accompanied William the Conqueror into England in the Norman Conquest of the nation. There is a bathroom opposite Julian’s room for the use of this room’s inhabitants that similarly provides modernity in its Burlington-furnished decor, whilst maintaining aspects of historicity with original paintings in ornate gilded frames.
