This room is named after Henry Plumptre, the second eldest son of the 21st Baron FitzWalter, FitzWalter Brook Plumptre. Henry’s love of horse racing and breeding that led him to his equestrian career is echoed in his former bedroom through the paintings of horses aligning the walls. First introduced to the industry as a child, Henry spent time at Point-to-Point horse races in his Kentish youth, an amateur form of racing over fences, which seemed to have inspired him to pursue a career in the field. After his education at Radley College in Oxfordshire, Henry commenced a career in Point-to-Point as a jockey, but soon moved on to make his mark in the thoroughbred industry.
Moving to Australia in 1977, he began working at Widden Stud in the Widden Valley, becoming the Stud Manager three years later. Returning to his native roots in the UK, he began working at Godolphin, Newmarket in Suffolk which was under the ownership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UEA and the Ruler of Dubai. This was a connection that would later return in his career as he became managing director of the world-famous Darley Australia, owned by Sheikh Mohammed, in 2008. Henry’s lifelong commitment to the equestrian industry was recognised in 2014 when he was awarded the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association (HTBA) President’s Award for lifetime achievement.
The dark blue and gold theme in the Hague Blue Farrow & Bell paint on the walls and elaborate modern wall-art of the bedroom reflects both his successes and the colours of the establishments he has brought glory to. Whilst exhibiting a distinctly modern aura in its pristine finish, the room maintains a classical feeling; the restored original wooden flooring after the house’s 2015 renovation and ornate tables that survived a destructive fire in 1959 act as constant reminders of the rich history of this 18th-century house. This room is situated next door to a bathroom with a bath-shower.
